We have all heard and read that there are four hormones that determine the happiness of human beings.

Endorphins, Dopamine, Serotonin, and Oxytocin. We need all these four to remain happy. Since it was difficult to remember, have coined the acronym DOSE ( Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, Endorphin)

D- DOPAMINE In our daily life and through our life journey, we achieve many small and large tasks and it releases various levels of *Dopamine*. When we get appreciated or get a pat on the back we feel good because it releases Dopamine. Similarly, when you appreciate others they get their dose of Dopamine. Also, different people get their dopamine while buying and shopping various things and unlike appreciation, one has to spend for it.

O- OXYTOCIN gets released when we become closer to other people, hug or our friends/family/colleagues or put our arms around or shake hands. During Covid times except for family members, hugging/shaking hands with others may not be the wise thing to do and this is a temporary phase.

S-SEROTONIN is released when we act/do things in a way that benefits others. When we give back to others, society, nature without any expectations we get a sufficient dose of SEROTONIN. Even sharing articles, blogs, answering queries on social media which benefits others will do.

E- ENDORPHIN gets released when we exercise for 30–45 minutes daily. This could be of any form and as simple as walking. Wholehearted Laughter is another great way of generating Endorphins. So go ahead and watch funny videos, standup comedy shows are just laughing with your family/friends and colleagues. If one can’t do force yourself to laughter as many people do in laughter clubs across parks. Fake it till you make it and it becomes genuine laughter.

So in short do the following daily and get your DOSE. It is FREE but needs some effort for many and is effortless to a few.

  • Dopamine- appreciate others.
  • Oxytocin- show genuine warmth to others.
  • Serotonin- Help others without expectations.
  • Endorphins- Exercise daily and laugh genuinely.
